The work of Lenka Bakes is based on insight, observation and documentation in the field, research that could be called spiritual archaeology. Series of works has been created during the residence at Hart Haus in the city of Hong Kong.
The immersive objects consist of photographs, literary snippets, re-use material, and natural objects representing the layers of reality that are the physical memory of the city and its inhabitants. At the same time, they reflect the obscure forms of the everyday world that exist as if between time and space, taking place beneath the surface and yet projected into our most tangible reality.
“To me spiritual archeology means to uncover and decompose layers that shape our reality and create our identities. It‘s meditative practice during which I‘m reflecting my self in the environment of the city, in time and space. I try to capture a moment that allows to see and compose our selfs like in a fleeting reflection on the flowing water,” says Lenka Bakes.
Using all of these forms, Lenka Bakes confronts the dimensions of our personal self-reflection with mythology, history, the art of the past, sacred texts, and dreams of the future that shape our reality and crystallize in modern and contemporary environments and architecture. To enter the timeless space of Adaptus Archaeology is to embrace a multi-layered vision in which one’s own self and the entirety of human history and culture is mirrored in one place.
